Whaling expedition; ITN ENGLAND: London: GIR: 2 way ex JAPAN: Tokyo: INT Joji Morishita (Japanese Fisheries Agency) interview SOT - this is scientific research, our research plan is directly responding to recommendations from the scientific committee of the International Whaling Commission - purely a scientific programme / people are saying it is commercial because the by-product (meat) is going to the commercial market in Japan, but this is required by the International Whaling Commission too / one of the main purposes of this study is to find out the connection between whales, fish & fishery to do this we need to know the contents of the stomach & need to know exact age of whale - both can only be done by killing whale / only the Western World (USA & Britain) oppose this research, China, Korea, Norway all support it / compares the West asking Japan to stop whaling for moral reasons to India treating the cow as a sacred animal, yet not asking the West to stop eating it / we have been measuring the time to death and it is comparable to any wild animal that is hunted, like deer / whales are part of a ecosystem which can be utilised in a sustainable manner, we've never asked to utilise depleted species
