Farmer cultivates 100,000 sunflowers to bring smiles to visitors
Video footage taken June 22 in Tosa, Kochi Prefecture, shows a field with about 100,000 blooming sunflowers measuring up to 2.5 meters tall with faces up to 25 centimeters wide grown by local farmer Kunikazu Matsumoto. The 67 year-old first began planting sunflower seeds in 2001 and last summer brought 280 loads of mountain soil on a 2-ton truck to improve the quality of the field. About 9,000 people came to see the field last year, according to Matsumoto, who hopes to see more visitors arrive this year.
