Sweden to hold general election on Sunday

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - SEPTEMBER 9: Swedish voters will go to polls on Sunday (Sept. 11) to choose a new parliament which could result in a new prime minister and a new government. The ruling Social Democrats are apparently desperately trying to appeal to voters who see immigrants as the root cause of their problems. At the same time, the far-right Sweden Democrats party – known for its neo-Nazi ties – is set to become the second-largest party in the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag as they are now four percentage points ahead of the Moderates, the country’s biggest right-wing party. According to the most recent poll conducted by broadcaster SVT and Novus, the Sweden Democrats have the support of 21.5% of voters compared to 17.4% for the Moderates. The Sweden Democrats celebrated the result on their Twitter account, saying it was “a good start to the week.” The election so far has proven to be about who will form a government, and with whom, after the polls close. Swedish politics are categorized by fragmentation of the vote among eight main parties and polarization towards four left-wing and four right-wing parties. In Sweden with a population of 10.5 million, 7 million 700 thousand voters will vote to elect the government that will rule the country for the next four years and to select the mayors and the provincial council. Eight political parties are currently represented in the parliament in Sweden, with 349 seats. (Footage by Atila Altuntas /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
