Groundbreaking invention in bone fracture treatments
DUZCE, TURKEY - APRIL 01: Prof.Dr. Istemi Alp Yuce from Orthopedics Department of Duzce University Medical School introduces a groundbreaking device that'll make plaster casts and orthopedic surgeries redundant in bone fracture treatments in Duzce, Turkey on April 01, 2017. The device called "minimal invasive unilateral multiplanar fixator" is invented by a team of Turkish scientists made up of Prof. Dr. Erkut Karaca, Physics teacher Adem Akkus apart from Yuce. The device based on hinge sytem and can take shape all according to position of bones. It works through a specifically designed computer program that differs the device from similar equipments used for the same purpose. It consists of 2 connected parts each contain 3 rods (with screw systems) that're used to make the necessary adjustments all according to formula that'll come from its unique computer program using x-ray data. The device also has 3 (two on the upper part and one on the lower part) thin and long extensions called nails that will be attached to upper and lover parts of bone structure from one side. The system works as follows: Doctors will get x-rays of bone fractures from 2 different angles after attaching the nails to the bones upon arrival of their patients. After this the fractures will be fixed gradually through the 6 rods (3 on upper part and 3 on lower part) that will be adjusted all according to formula that comes from the computer program. According to the inventors wrong bone unions will be completely prevented with the invention that'll shorten recovery process as as well. Apart from that patients can take bath and they can easily reach to and scratch itching parts of their their body which are considered to be quite a luxury if plaster casts applied instead. The invention won gold medal in 2017 Istanbul Inventions Fair (ISIF17). (Footage by Omer Faruk Cebeci / Anadolu Agency / Getty Images)
