Huge Ice Dance Off Hokkaido Caught In Coast Guard Survey

A gigantic swirl of white fragments of drift ice was spotted off the northern island of Hokkaido on March 23, 2016 in shiretoko ,Japan. The 30-kilometer-wide natural phenomenon is also known as a “great spin of drift ice” and occurs when the tidal current is made visible by clusters of drift ice swirling on it. It was spotted in the Sea of Okhotsk about 30 kilometers north of the Shiretoko Peninsula on the northeastern tip of Hokkaido during a Japan Coast Guard aerial survey. The circular swirl, containing large flat pieces and smaller fragments of ice, is too massive to observe from the coast or boat and can only be spotted from aircraft or satellites. The 1st Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, which is in charge of the coast of Hokkaido, reported the swirl while it was mapping drift ice off the Shiretoko Peninsula.
