William Hague MP (Conservative Leader) interview SOT
- radical and far reaching look at politics / not afraid to consider anything
- we're in a country that is feeling let down / have a government that has made a lot of promises and said that it would do a lot on public services and hasn't
- got to really think about how we could deliver those improvements that they have failed to deliver
- believe that we stand for the family that works hard, saves hard, tries to be independent of the state, wants a better future for their kids and believe in their country
- (PM Tony) Blair might say this but he doesn't deliver and he is submerging the country more and more in Europe / should be saying, in Europe not run by Europe
- believe this and am going to deliver, policies all come from that
- time moves on, some of what did in the past won't do in the future if a mistake
- the ERM was a mistake so not getting involved in anything like that
- in favour of keeping the pound and staying out of the single currency
- think that we centralise power too much / in favour of decisions being made closest to the people who are affected by them, about schools, hospitals etc
- always a key policy of the Conservative party
- new tax policy is to help the family / halving the tax rate on savings for lowest income families / need to do more to help people who are trying to provide for their own old age
- seeing a clear failure by government to deliver on health / will make a policy statement after discussion
- in favour of using tax payers money more effectively, less waste
- (Michael Portillo's revelations about his private life) essentially a private matter / would welcome him back in the House of Commons
- not had much private life myself / part of being a politician
