New Study Attributes Rise In Pedestrian Deaths To Smart Phones And Marijuana

NEW YORK, NY - MARCH 06: A woman places flowers at a memorial at the site of an accident where two small children were killed yesterday by a driver on March 6, 2018 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. A new report by the Governors Highway Safety Association estimates the number of pedestrian deaths last year was 6,000 nationwide, a 33-year high. The report highlights a number of factors for the continued increase including distracted drivers using mobile devices and a larger number of cars on the road due to an improved economy. Despite the accident yesterday, New York City has been seeing a steady decline of pedestrian deaths since Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero initiative. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)
