Boom and bust cycle in Rangely, Colorado
RANGELY, CO - DECEMBER 5 - Wes Dunn enjoys a cup of coffee and breakfast while the morning sun streams in at the Main Street Cafe on December 5, 2017 in Rangely, Colorado. This small northwestern town is struggling to keep residents and jobs in the community. The town does not have a full-service grocery store and no big-box offerings which means residents go to Vernal, Utah to stock up on fresh produce or buy major home appliances. Rio Blanco County is now trying to find ways of diversifying their county's economic drivers so that they aren't as dependent on the boom-bust cycle of natural resource extraction industries which Rangely has been a part of in the past.
