The Kayayo Girls of Ghana

ACCRA, GHANA - AUGUST 2010: The market in the suburb of Agbogbloshie, in the capital Accra, Ghana. A kayayo (plural: kayayei) is a market carrier/porter in Ghana, a role mainly occupied by teenage girls and young women, but occasionally young boys too. Often from tribal areas in the north, they provide a valuable service in Ghana's urban markets, and face the risks of criminals, and sleeping rough in many cases, in order to earn money.
