Charlie and Oona Chaplin Watching a Tennis Match

(Original Caption) The Chaplins Re-Enter Social Life. Los Angeles, California: Comedian Charlie Chaplin and his wife, Oona O'Neill, showed up in public for the first time since the actor injured his leg and ankle during the time of Joan Barry's paternity suit against him. They attended a war fund benefit tennis meet at which racquets of the players were auctioned off. Chaplin bid up to $300 on Bill Tilden's racquet, dropped out when Barbara Hutton, the dime store heiress, bid twice as much.
