The 7,951-ton roll-on-roll-off British car ferry t
ZEEBRUGGE, BELGIUM: The 7,951-ton roll-on-roll-off British car ferry the Harald of Free Enterprise belonging to Townsend Thoresen lays on its side off the Belgian port of Zeebrugge 07 March 1987 surrounded by rescue boats. Two hundred cross channel passengers were feared dead in the night of 06 March after the ferry capsized in waters off Zeebrugge. The ferry rolled over and sank a mile outside the port. First indications were that the bow doors were open enabling water to pour into the car deck. The ferry had just left the port around 7,00pm bound for Dover when she sank, leaving on third of the hull still above water. The disaster happened so swiftly there wasn't time to send an SOS.
