Lord Blythswood, Archibald Campell (1865-1940), a Scottish scientist designed this instrument. It was used to direct sunlight into an ancillary instrument, such as a spectrograph, for analysis. It uses a flat mirror, driven by a clockwork mechanism, to follow the Sun as it move across the sky.
