London boys on a month-long course at the Eskdale Outward Bound School set down their packs with relief for a well-earned breather and enjoy the view afforded them across the surface of Wastwater, deepest of Cumberland's lakes. Forming a dignified background to this picture are the cloud-capped peaks of Great Gable and the Scafell Pikes. Though the winter has been a long and cold one, this area of North West England is already seeing the first of its many annual sight-seers.
