In Roman times, colored, ornamented glass was used for vessels, mosaics, wall decorations and furniture ornaments. For the production different colored glass was formed into tubes and rods. These were pressed together and heated, resulting in a long rod. The glass, now cut into slices, had a variety of amorphous or floral patterns..
