HIV Treatment Program for South African Miners

Miners drilling underground at Great Noligwa gold mine. Working conditions can be extremely cramped and physically difficult. An estimated 30% of South African gold miners are HIV positive. The mine owners, AngloGold, were the first in South Africa to provide free health care and anti-retroviral therapy to infected workers. This benefits both the workers and the employers as the treatment keeps men healthy and fit to work, and maintains the company's workforce. (Photo by Gideon Mendel/Corbis via Getty Images)
