Smokey the Bear and "Little Smokey"
(Original Caption) Washington, D.C.: "Little Smokey," a year-and-a-half orphaned bear seems totally unconcerned about the ceremonies at the Agriculture Department, November 15, at which he was installed officially as the heir to Smokey the Bear. When the original Smokey, a 21-year-old bear, symbol of the Forest Fire Prevention Campaign, and his mate, Goldie, failed to produce a natural heir after nine years of "marriage," it was decided to give them an "adopted' son to carry on the campaign. November 15, 1971.
