Shipwreck of the Herald of Free Enterprise Ferry
In one of Belgium's worst disasters, the English cross-channel passenger car ferry Herald of Free Enterprise capsized in calm waters off the coast of Zeebrugge on March 6, 1987, taking the lives of 193 people. At the time, there were 459 passengers and 80 crew members on board when the ship left the port in Zeebrugge for Dover with its bow doors open, causing the tragedy.
