The 170 villas were built between 1978 and 1983, following corrupt deals involving local politicians and the Mafia. Over the years following several failed demolition attempts, a collective of Artists from Palermo, called “Fare Ala”, began, without permission from local authorities, to transform the abandoned buildings into an open air gallery known as the "Pizzo Sella Art Village".
