Inside Cairo's Salah El-Din Citadel
CAIRO, EGYPT: A general view of the Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun Mosque on September 6, 2022 in Cairo, Egypt. Also known as the Citadel of Saladin, this stone, medieval, Islamic-era fortification was built on the Mokattam Hills in Cairo by Salah ad-Din between 1176-1183 and developed further by An-Nasir Muhammed between 1310-1341. It was the seat of Egypt's government until the 19th century. The site was modernised by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1805-1848, awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1978 and opened to the public in 1986.(Photo by Fadel Dawod/Getty Images)
