A general view of Sullom Voe Terminal, an oil and gas terminal in the Shetland Islands, north of Scotland on September 8, 2021. - In the far north of the United Kingdom, where the wind blows and the sea rages, the islands of Orkney and Shetland have long relied on oil and gas for prosperity. But as supplies dwindle and the fight against climate change becomes more urgent, the islands off the northeast coast of Scotland are increasingly turning to renewables. Sullom Voe Terminal handles production from oilfields in the North Sea and East Shetland Basin and was built between 1975 and 1981. The terminal receives oil through the Brent and Ninian pipeline systems. - TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY Véronique DUPONT (Photo by ADRIAN DENNIS / AFP) / TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY Véronique DUPONT (Photo by ADRIAN DENNIS/AFP via Getty Images)
