Future Tunisian President and New-Destour (New Constitution) nationalist party leader Habib Ben Ali Bourguiba (R), jokes with the bey (the King of Tunisia), Muhammad al-Amin (C) 01 June 1955 after returning from exile in France (1952-55) to Tunis. The bey had been the object of constant criticism from Bourguiba who accused him of reluctance to participate actively in the struggle for independence. After independence the Constituent Assembly voted 25 July 1957 abolition of the monarchy. Bourguiba ruled Tunisia from 1957 until being destituted in 1987, after leading the country to independence from France in 1956. (Photo by AFP) (Photo by -/AFP via Getty Images)
