Durham's prison system has just been in the news for all the wrong reasons and it was making similarly negative headlines 26 years ago, A group of women, together with a jazz band, staged a protest march to highlight their campaign for the closure of Durham Jails She Wing, Members of the newly-formed Women In Durham Prison support group marched from Durhams market place to the jail, accompanied by members of the Stumbling Band from Newcastle, On the way, they handed out leaflets calling for H-wing to be shut down, claiming the prisoners were being forced to live in inhumane conditions, The notorious block was dubbed She Wing when it became home to some of Britains most notorious women killers, Inmates included Myra Hindley and Rose West, It was closed in 2004 and re-opened as a male block, 6th April 1984, , ( Morris Ital and Ford Escort ).
