According to the legend, the column made of salt and rocks standing on the Southern shore of the Dead Sea is the statue of prophet Lot's wife. This geomorphological formation is considered as a material incarnation of the myth. According to the Bible story, the dissolute life of the inhabitants of Sodom angered God. In response, God destroyed the whole region in a deluge of fire, salt and sulphur. On God's advice, Lot left Sodome with his wife and daughters. Though they were not allowed to look back towards Sodom while leaving, his wife looked back, seeing the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
