Brigitte Bardot

Brigitte Bardot posing for photographers in Italy for a final scene in the film Private Lives. In France the film was released as La Vie Privee, but for its British and American release it was renamed A Very Private Affair (1962). The film was a clearly autobiographical turn by Bardot as a young celebrity unable to cope with the pressures of stardom. Although only released in 1962 the film was intended as Bardot's swansong. However she was persuaded not to retire and went on making films up until 1973. In this period she made Le Mepris (1963). Although it received mixed reviews at the time the film is now recognised as a classic and probably Bardot's best. However, it's original failure led to Bardot being replaced as Europe's most popular actress by Sophia Loren. 14th August 1961. (Photo by Mirrorpix via Getty Images)
