Anzac Day Haka And Corroboree Performed Online As Coronavirus Sees Public Commemorations Cancelled

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - APRIL 25: Bianca Williams and Brock Tutt perform a traditional smoking ceremony at their home in Matraville as part of the Haka and Corroboree for Life ANZAC online service on April 25, 2020 in Sydney, Australia. Bianca is a dancer with the 'Jannawi Dance Clan' and Brock a dancer and didgeridoo player with 'Muggerah Cultural Group'. Traditional Anzac Day ceremonies have been cancelled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions on gatherings of people across Australia. Men's mental health charities Haka for Life and Corroboree for Life had planned a large scale performance to take place during the Coloured Digger March held in Redfern each year that honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander servicemen and women and those who served in non-military support roles. In response to current COVID-19 restrictions, they will instead be uniting and performing online, providing live stream service to honour the ANZACs. Founded by Leon Ruri in 2017, Haka For Life is a charity organisation that supports suicide awareness and men's mental health and wellbeing in the Maori community. Each year they unite with Corroboree For Life to perform during ANZAC day ceremonies with the aim of supporting, empowering and engaging with indigenous communities. Anzac day is a national holiday in Australia and New Zealand, traditionally marked by a dawn service held during the time of the original Gallipoli landing and commemorated with ceremonies and parades throughout the day. Anzac Day commemorates the day the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) landed on the shores of Gallipoli on April 25, 1915, during World War I. (Photo by Lisa Maree Williams/Getty Images)
