FRANCE-POLYNESIA-OVERSEAS-NUCLEAR
Astrid Hoffman poses in a garden in Mahina, Tahiti on April 16, 2021. - Astrid Hoffman is from Tureia, the island closest to Moruroa. She lived with her parents on this island during atmospheric tests between 1966 and 1974. Many members of her family developed pathologies: thyroid cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer or skin problems. Her grandfather, brothers, grandmother and mother died of illness. Her mother had breast cancer which spread to her bones and liver. Astrid has put together a CIVEN compensation file for her mother. She got 120,000 euros but remains angry with the Polynesian state and government for allowing the population to suffer without protecting or preventing them. France carried out 193 nuclear tests in French Polynesia between 1966 and 1996. The Gambier archipelago, located only a few hundred kilometers from Moruroa, was particularly affected by the radioactive fallout.
